Who do you think is the Queen of Pop, Madonna or Britney?
Anticipating the release of “The Singles Collection box set on November 24, MTV spent the next few days looking back to a pop legend.
Britney archived feature interviews and conduct further interviews with directors, producers and collaborators who have worked closely with Britney the past 10 years. Here the sixth installment, devoted to the first single from her fourth album entitled In the Zone:
It was a power struggle – or at least the meeting of the two Senior Pop Music Divas of all time – when Britney Spears and Madonna got together to Me Against the Music, the first single from the album In The Zone, 2003. The stars took to the audience (one more than another [referring to Britney]) through the video with her flirting.
Madonna is an icon of an earlier generation and Britney from a younger generation. Britney was at the height of her career at the time said video director Paul Hunter told MTV News. So it was a sort of challenge to unite these two worlds. I wanted this to be a bit like a game of cat and mouse with some preliminaries between Britney and Madonna, something to incite the public.
A few years ago, Britney revealed that Madonna’s collaboration came thanks to the Video Music Awards 2003 – you know, where Britney and Madonna kissed. I was in the midst of rehearsals for the VMAs, I showed her the song and she said: It’s your first single (from In the Zone) true?, Recalled Spears. I said: Yes, I hope it is, then she said: I really like and I said: Really? Well, you work with me?, And she accepted.
Hunter said the video was filmed Madonna and Britney keep separate. I tried to play with this thing of opposites, for example, Britney is in black and white Madonna said. Then you can see them dancing around a bed … and believe that one is climbing up the other and will do something crazy.
However, Spears said that nothing crazy could happen between her and Madonna, who was only playing with people. I really did not see or touch it, only their presence felt Spears said. The song is basically about being in a nightclub and get carried away by the music around you. This is my first collaboration and it is with Madonna’s own person!.
