The people of Malawi against Madonna’s school
The draft Madonna to build a school in Malawi is still a matter of dispute between the government of the country and the people that are trying to paralyze the work. This is a further blow to the singer in this African country, after the difficulties he had to take two of his natural children of Malawi.
About 140 villagers Chinkhota, neighborhood where it is expected to build the multibillion-dollar school, the authorities claim more money for the land that the government has loaned the Celebration singer for a period of 99 years. They have threatened to affect the construction of the school if the Government do not agree to their demands.
“We are protesting because we feel that the Government and Raising Malawi (an organization created by Madonna) were not just rejected (…) previous agreements about how much to pay us and now we say that the land is not ours,” said the chief of the village.
According Chinkhota, the problem is that many people have been displaced from their land and have no money to settle elsewhere. “The construction of this school will be affected if these problems are not resolved, since my people have not received enough money to buy agricultural land elsewhere and continue with their lives,” he added.
Meanwhile, Lilongwe authorities have threatened to arrest the villagers if they continue boycotting the construction of a school. “If we can not agree and if they can not understand that this is government land, then I will have no choice but to tell the police who arrested for blocking a public work in development,” warned Charles Kalemba, Lilongwe District Commissioner .
Raising Malawi, the school planned by the Queen of Pop, is located about 15 kilometers from the capital city and, within two years should receive 500 girls from 28 districts of the small African country. The construction of the center has a budget of 10 million.
Not the first controversy that starred Madonna in this country, since she twice has faced the public, trying to adopt two of their children born in Malawi.
This country prohibits non-residents to adopt children. However, Madonna has been allowed to adopt little David Banda and Mercy James, so the government has been accused of giving special treatment to the singer.
