Malawi protects school Madonna is building there

The government threatened to arrest farmers who blocked the work.

The construction of the school for girls in Malawi Madonna has planned is paralyzed. The reason: About 140 villagers blocked the work and seek more money for land, which the NGO Madonna, Raising Malawi, has leased for a period of 99 years. The government has threatened with arrest if not removed.

The district commissioner of Lilongwe, Charles Kalemba, other senior government officials and Raising Malawi have failed to reach an agreement with representatives of the villagers, in an attempt to resolve the dispute. “If we can not agree about this and if they can not understand that this is government land, then I will have no choice but to tell the police who arrested for blocking a public work in developing the site,” said Kalemba to village chief, Chinkhota.

Madonna opened last month of the school building and promised to build similar facilities in other countries if the project is successful.

The construction of the Raising Malawi Academy for Girls, located in the village of Chinkhota (about 15 miles from the capital Lilongwe) take two years to complete and will host 500 girls in the 28 districts of the small southern African country. The work will cost about $ 15 million.

“We are protesting because we feel that the Government and Raising Malawi have not been fair (…) rejected previous agreements about how much to pay us and now we say that the land is not ours,” said Chinkhota after the meeting.
