Speaking to The Daily Beast, the director of Sherlock Holmes suggested that moviegoers are not able to separate the pop icon off screen image of the characters he plays in movies.

“If you ask me, I think it’s okay,” referring to Madonna’s ability to act. “I think that is perfectly fine.”

Ritchie also defended his 2002 film “Swept Away” starring his ex-wife and was harshly criticized, saying it addressed the material covered in an “ironic” way.

“Presumably everything to be ironic,” he said. “This is a man who beats a woman, and while she was. There were all kinds of irony. If you ask me, everything was pretty interesting, but it was so wild a relationship between a man and woman, you can not get their way in contemporary society.
